Is it my imagination or has there been a shift in emphasis around the acquisition and transfer of human skills in the workplace?  I refer specifically to ‘soft’ skilling and the shift from the character-related topics of integrity, morals and ethics towards those ability-linked skills such as negotiating, conflict management, communication or problem solving.

Do you remember the days when the respect for your family and the clan was always at the forefront of personal decision making? Is the development of character now being compromised in the quest to fast-track progress with quicker fixes which may be easier because they are less inclined to deal with the complexities of truths and emotions?

Character is who you are while competence is what you do. Acknowledge that both are required for healthy relationships. An ability to lead and influence people will always be judged on one’s character and competence.

However, if you influence primarily through your ability, it won’t be long before people pushback as they don’t particularly care how much you know. Ability may get you into the room but it’s your character that will keep you there.

Think back to the last time you were so swayed by the charisma, wit and charm of someone that you subconsciously dismissed a ‘character check’ on them, ‘blinding’ potential flaws.

Character is at the core of transformation and enduring relationships. It works with human nature by capturing the head and the heart.

Remember that ‘winning’ with people is more a function of character and with that privilege comes a responsibility as to whom much is given, much will be expected.

Always be working to get better at what you do although be more concerned with character, what you know you are.
